With understanding how the right mattress supports your dogs long term muscle & joint health, here are some more valuable tips that are worth considering before letting them sink into their bed, that will have a positive influence on their wellbeing.
Let them spread in bed
Our dogs love curling up in a cosy ball, although when sleeping, just like us, their bodies alter position during the night, so it is important there is room to change position, helping prevent sore stiff muscles & joints.
If your dog's muscles are fatigued after exercise they can still be shortened. Sleeping in a cramped space can continue a contraction, which can lead to spasms occurring, this can lead to soreness, stiffness & decrease range in movement.
If your dog is coping with muscle weakness, such as a senior dog, or if your dog has an ongoing chronic condition such as arthritis, or is on crate rest after surgery, then ensuring they have room to stretch out would help prevent tight sore muscle developing, which may cause further discomforts.
Keep away from cold drafts
If they're in a draft area, such as right next to a back door, "especially if they have sore muscles already",when the cold air from the draft hits their body it can cause muscles to contract, resulting in muscle soreness and stiffness.
Keep their bed dry
A soggy bed will keep your dog colder and wetter for longer, as well as becoming smelly!
Cold muscles can stay tight & contracted, a damp bed may also increase the risk of muscle soreness & stiffness.
If your dog is coping with arthritis, cold & damp conditions can often increase the pain sensation through there muscles and joints.
Our dogs are such an important part of our family, and by making these simple considerations can make a world of difference to their overall wellbeing. After all, how could we not want to improve the quality of their lives, as they improve the quality of ours.
