How a towel rub can help keep your dog healthy
There are many benefits to drying our furry friends after a soggy walk in the rain, or after bath time.
A good few minutes of drying can:
*Get their blood circulation going, warming their muscles & joints, ensuring they are getting the oxygen & nutrients they need for repair. 'If you have a working dog, then keeping then warm & dry between their activities would be beneficial to help maintain muscle & joint health'.
*It helps reduce further soreness & stiffness of senior dogs with arthritis.
*Dogs can feel more relaxed when towel dried. The slight pressure of drying with a towel can be a form of massage for them.
*Wiping around their ears, coat, under skin folds, will help reduce the risk of skin & ear infections.
A good shake takes off approximately 70% of the water in just seconds, a survival tool that is naturally a part of our dogs makeup to preserve body heat.
If you have an older dog with arthritis, or your dog is coping with other chronic conditions where they may have developed Pains, Tensions and Restrictions, they may not be able to shake as well, leaving their bodies damp & cold for longer.
Drying will help retain their body heat, protect their immune system & reduce further discomforts.
When it come to pups, they may still be too weak to shake off the water, or will not have fully-grown fur. Letting them air dry alone may weaken their immune systems.
After a dry off you could wrap them up cosy warm in their soft comfy blanket.
You want your dog to have a happy experience when it comes to a towel down, so here are some drying off tips.
- Rub your dog's coat in a gentle manner, not applying too much pressure, even if rubbing quickly.
- Be gentle when drying your dogs ears, neck, chest, paws, also any compromised muscles & joints, as these are sensitive areas. If their drying experience is uncomfortable, they may be reluctant next time!
- If your dog pulls away while you are rubbing, this may be a sign it's a little uncomfortable. I often had to gently compress the towel around my Golden Retrievers stifle 'knee' due to her arthritis.
- Change towels when they get too wet. Some dogs with thick coats may need more than one towel when drying.
Who'd of thought that a simple towel dry could be so beneficial for your dogs health & wellbeing!
